Actual Width:
See Face Width.
End Matched: Tongue and
groove on both ends of the board. This
offers big savings on materials and labor,
by not having to measure and cut every board
to fall on a stud. You measure and cut only
once per row and the piece you cut off, is
the starter piece on next row.
Face Width:
The width of the board that
"shows" after it has been put up. The
actual width of the board might be larger
due to a "tongue" that is counted in the
actual width, but which you don't see when
it is connected into the "groove" on another
board. This can be very confusing to
people not familiar with buying wood.
To get around this confusion, simply ask
your vendor when they give you measurements
if they are "overall width," or "face
width."
Kiln Dried:
This means that the product that is
identified as "kiln dried" is wood that has
been dried in a giant oven so that its
moisture content is between 6%-9%.

blueprints or plans of the project.
Tongue and groove joint:
A joint formed
by the insertion of the “tongue” of one wood
member into the “groove” of the other;
modifications include tongue and groove
rabbet joint, dado tongue and rabbet,
tongued shoulder joint, dado and rabbet
joint, dado and lip joint.
